Falstaff
Opera
Falstaff is a work perfectly suited for the Opéra des Nations and is the older Verdi’s last, ultimate and absolute masterpiece. A modern and personal score, composed at the age of 75, the opera is based on Shakespeare’s comedy, The Merry Wives of Windsor. Arrigo Boito, Verdi’s friend and confidant, persuaded him to return to his desk and compose the comic opera he had long hesitated to write. Verdi gives free rein to the aches and moans of the human heart and ends it all with a huge peal of laughter. Writing for his pleasure only, Verdi completely overhauls his compositional style, frees himself of the strictures of 19th century convention and follows his fancy to offer his audience a work coming straight from his heart. Verdi’s final bow on the opera stage shows the triumph of a man smiling at the world after having dealt with all of life’s vicissitudes. Is it his philosophy of life? Is it his swansong? “Tutto nel mondo è burla.”

Die Zauberflöte
Opera
The first bars of the overture already suggest the conflict between the kingdoms of Night, heralded in sombre chords, and Day, with its dazzling fugue. Two couples embark on a journey of initiation to the tune of a magical flute and a glockenspiel. Is it really still necessary to write introductions to Mozart’s best-loved work, with all its various interpretations? Its very title opens the door to a dream world where two complementary initiations are taking place: the Man begins his journey into the feminine world of Night, and the Woman prepares to join the Man in the kingdom of Day, under the auspices of the two great and complementary stars, the Sun and the Moon. Is it a tale of initiation? Is it a Masonic opera? What counts is that Mozart is the magician who leads grown-ups and children into a world that has no place for hatred. The Magic Flute is just the story to take an audience across to the other bank, where more fairy-tale magic awaits us.

Peking opera
Opera
There are few opportunities, outside of China, to indulge in the refined pleasures of Peking opera. Appearing around 1790 in the imperial capital of the Qing dynasty, this form of musical theatre mixes song, music, dance, drama and martial arts. Very little importance is given to scenography as the performers concentrate mostly on the symbolism of their character’s gestures, according to the personalities depicted by their makeup. A series of archetypal characters, accompanied by a few musicians, is brought to life in episodes of Chinese history or folk tales, such as The Women Generals of the Yang Family or One Good Turn Deserves Another. As with other works the Grand Théâtre will be staging at the Opéra des Nations, these guest performances take our audiences off the beaten path, this time to discover a great Chinese cultural tradition through a form of theatre that does away with excessive ornamentation in order to achieve greater purity of expression. Alcina
Opera
The Opéra des Nations, with its wooden structure and intimate setting, is ideally suited to the performance of works from the Baroque period, of which we will be staging more over the next seasons. And what better to kick off than one of Handel’s most successful operas, Alcina? On her island, the enchantress Alcina uses her magic powers to seduce Crusader knights before turning them into stone or changing them into animals. As in Orlando and Ariodante, Handel takes his subject from Ludovico Ariosto’s Renaissance epic, Orlando furioso, a poem that inspired many an 18th century composer. In his third “magic” opera, wanton witchcraft and intertwining passions are the obstacles that Bradamante must face, in order to save her lover Ruggiero from the spell cast by the sorceress Alcina. And now you too can succumb to the enchantment of one of Handel’s most musically charming operas!
